Madhusudan Naidu narrates an incident where Swami explains the need of being born twice
The story is centred around the time when a devotee approaches Swami to get His blessings on her birthday. She brings her son along with her into the interview room where Madhusudan Naidu also happens to be. After granting His blessings to her Swami skillfully directs the talk to the concept of being born twice. Citing the Brahmanical culture Swami speaks about the need for man to be reborn in the presence of God. He says that this is what differentiates human existence from animal existence. Everyone must strive to be reborn in the grace of God whose child he/she is

To seek the blessings of Swami on her birthday, as the devotee came inside the interview room, Swami asked, “When is your birthday?”

“Today Swami”, she replied shyly.
Swami said, “ Oh! Not really today. This day your body might have been born to your parents, but your true birth happened only recently, when you came to Me.”
Then He went on to explain, “Brahmins (the priest cast) who have undergone the sacred thread ceremony, are called ‘Dwija’ or twice born. At the birth of the body, they are born to their physical parents, whereas upon the ceremony they are offered to God so that they can lead a divine life; this is the second birth for them. When they consider God as their mother and father, they are truly born. Only when they live in Brahman (Divinity) can they be truly Brahmins.”
“Sai Baba, means divine mother and father; so only when you came to Me, you were truly born”, Swami said.

Then he turned to her son and asked, “So if someone asks you who is your mother and father, what would you say?”
Having heard the conversation so far, the boy innocently replied, “Sai Baba”.
Swami with a chuckle said, “Aye! If you tell this at your school, they will send you back home to be shown to some psychiatrist. (Pointing towards his parents) for the world, they are your parents, but truly Sai Baba alone is the real mother and father for all.”
“Khana, Peena, Sona, Marna, (eating, drinking, sleeping and dying), such a birth is there even for animals but when man is born into his Divinity, the real birth happens”, Swami concluded.
As the delicious cake was brought in thereafter, I wondered if we all could now celebrate our second birthday too!
